Pravidlo č. 1: Žádná pravidla! / Rule no. 1: No rules!

Pravidly teď myslím různé tréninkové plány a principy.
A to ještě není všechno.
A měla bych.
Už léta si píšu každý trénink do deníčku. Měla bych si to uvědomovat častěji :)

I've been reading Born to run again since yesterday (this time I google faces of characters - it's quite interesting). Together with my hilly walk/jog trip yesterday it makes me think that the rules are for nothing for me. I mean rules within the meaning of exact training plans and principles. I can tell you the reasons.
First I'm not a pro-athlete. My training is not why the Earth keeps rotating so it has to be adapted to situation time to time. And this "time to time" happens so often that there are more sessions adapted than the original ones :) The meaningful training changes into something chaotic loosing it's substance. The combination of the stress caused by missed or changed session ("This is not going to work because I missed my long run/interval run/relaxation!") and the non-customizing of the next session as a result of missed/changed sessions causes another stress and mainly not listening to the body. And that's not all. There are session that I train by the plan however stressed that I don't have enough time or I don't feel well or I just don't have the mood on it at the moment or I'm missing something else by this session. That all defends me in doing the training properly concentrated and enjoying it with the smile in my face. Isn't it better just do what you have on the mood, what you feels like a good idea and your body is looking forward it to?
I'm still fighting a little bit with my lower back. I'm not sure what should I do. But right now I have a feeling that the feelings are the most important feedback for me. I should not fight my body. We are at the same team. I should listen to it and give it what it wants. I should not worry it by my stresses and troubles or some plans that makes almost no sense.
When I was at the woods yesterday it was so easy for me, so natural. Without thinking about any training targets (unfortunately not true completely - see below) it all happened without any force so lightly. Just listening to my feet whether I should walk of jog. I felt jogging more natural than the walking quite often. Switching between without any problems or laziness. I felt no fatigue. Oh yes I have to say another think: my pace was very very slow and the track was quite short. But does it matter? I think it doesn't.
But I still feel some fear of taking part at some kind of a race. I can't understand the problem. There is still something wrong in my head. Some kind of desire for the success just diverts my attention for my body and feelings to something virtual. What do I really want? To impress someone or to enjoy my free time and the body capable of the natural performance forgotten by the modern civilization? I want to enjoy some race - to be happy on the road with others and to share our feelings. I'm not afraid of being the last one. It's fine. I'm afraid of being left out and defamed as being weak and having a weak will. And maybe I'm afraid of myself the most. That I would prefer some virtual success over the true experience and push my head into some stupid conditioning and stop listening to the body. That's the topic I have to explore more and find a way how to be happy on the road with others in the race.
I understand the the races are there so we can prove to the world and to ourselves how the hell fast are we. However I would prefer races just for fun. I dream about races where fellow athletes don't judge the quality of their race by how fast were they or how fast you were. We could talk just about the weather, nature and surroundings, feelings, without judging which pace is good and which is not. But this is not happening. I can change just my point of view. And I should do it. I hope it's just a matter of time when I would discover the way how.
Another issue is that I still can't understand the body fully. I assume that it just needs more time after the years or not listening to it at all. Despite the awesome feelings during the yesterday's trip my lower back hurt yesterday and a little bit today. Maybe it's because I've created a simple rule of ten percents plan that I've been trying to follow - to increase my millage to be able to take part at some race and not to feel ashamed. And this is probably stupid. There is actually no reason why to feel ashamed. And there is nor guarantee that I would not feel ashamed if I'm faster (or at least able to truly run). This indicates that the problem is not at my speed, endurance or will. It's probably in my head only again.
The whole situation is even more complicated by my love for statistics. For years I've been writing down my sessions. It's nice to have a look back and compare the real numbers with my imagination. The dark side of this actions is that I tend to force myself to break my bests or at least not to get worse. But the time is just one small part of it all. I should realize that more often :)
So this is how I continue my way of discovering the true nature of the world and the connections between the mind and the body.
And that's why I decided not to follow any particular plans. I'm going to do whatever I want if I feel that's a good idea :) And smile!

  2. Actually, racing ultras may be a really good answer for you. It is hard and demanding for everybody, even the best of the best struggle, and the pure achievement of finishing is REALLY valued above the finishing time, pace, or position at the finish. The slowest of all, who finish last, are often awarded the "tough as nails award" since it really takes some guts to keep moving tens of hours, longest of all, while being just minutes ahead of the cut-off times and on the verge of elimination during the whole event. The common experience of the struggle in a hard race creates some special bonds among participant so you don't really need words to express your feelings, and the others still get it.
well, ... now, maybe you think I am nuts for suggesting you run ultra just when you barely started "moving" again. But believe me, you really do not need to be strong and somehow special-trained nor special gifted runner to complete one of the very long distances. Many of my fellow ultras would never be able to run marathon in under 4 hours, some would even struggle with 2 hour half-marathon, but that does nto stop them from participating in 50M or even 100M events. It is the perseverance of your mind that counts above all, and MANY find out about their true strengths only two thirds in the race ... usually finishing as quite a different person than the one who toed the starting line.
Anyway ... enough talking, good luck with your renewed self.

P.S. There's no rule saying you can't try ultra.
